KOTA KINABALU: Upko welcomes the assurance by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal yesterday that Sabah will not allow girls below 18 years old to be married.
“As a mother I am happy to see our Chief Minister being progressive and showing his stance that girls under-18 shouldn’t be married off. This clearly shows that he is not for child marriage,” said Upko Deputy Wanita Chief, Datin Juliana Janni today.
“We would like to thank the Chief Minister for his wisdom,” added Juliana.
“I am a strong advocate that girls should be in school, be educated and learn instead of being married off young for whatever reasons.”
“It is most important for us to recognise that marrying off a daughter by thinking that the man can provide for her is a very wrong idealism because marrying off a minor would only mean that we are destroying her life and giving her away.”
“If we allow child marriage to happen, we will be an accomplice for ending their childhoods, their education and often compromises their health and economic well-being. This would also mean that we are inciting a huge economic and social costs to our own society,” she said.
Moving forward, she said girls must be educated that their main duty as children is to be in school, study hard in order to ensure that they are empowered, and to escape from poverty.-SabahNewsToday
