KOTA MARUDU: A total of 3,409 new members joined Upko during the closing of Upko Kota Marudu Triennial General Meeting at the Community Hall here on Tuesday.
It was by far the largest group of new members into the party.
Newly elected Upko Kota Marudu chief Datuk Verdon Bahanda who joined Upko two months earlier handed over the application forms to acting President Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangau.
Former Kota Marudu Upko chief, Padis Majingkin who was elected as deputy chairman of the division was also on hand to witness the handing over of the application forms.
Most of the new Upko members were formerly from PBS and PBRS with 2,500 from Matunggong of which 366 were brought in by newly elected Upko Kota Marudu Youth chief Jamil Majingkin.
Meanwhile, Datuk Abdul Latif Kandok, who is the former District Officer for Kinabatangan and currently advisor to the Kimaragang Malaysia Organisation, led 200 ex-Umno members to submit their membership application forms.
Native Chief Majial Mangulizang, meanwhile handed 100 membership application forms comprised former Umno members from Kampung Inukiran Matunggong and another 100 from Kampung Rondowon.
Former Tandek PBRS chief Jenron Jaikan also handed in his application together with 100 former PBRS members.
Earlier, Verdon, in his speech as the newly elected Upko Kota Marudu chief expressed the division’s full support for the president post to be uncontested with Tangau becoming party president.
The division also pledged support to Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin as the incoming Deputy President of Upko.
Tangau urged the new leadership of Upko Kota Marudu to continue with the struggle to uplift the socio-economic well-being of the Kadazandusun, Murut and Rungus (KDMR) community.
“I congratulate those who have been elected to helm Upko Kota Marudu for the next 3 years and I call upon every one to close ranks and work together to ensure unity prevails in the party so as to the party’s objective,” he said.
Also on hand were Kota Marudu Warisan Chairman Datuk Baintan Adun, Upko Wanita Chief Datin Seri Dr Jaina Sintian as well as various division chiefs namely Felix Joseph Saang (Beluran), Basari Sarkun (Silam), Datuk Pangiran Lalung (Sipitang) and Dennison R. Indang (Kota Kinabalu).-SabahNewsToday
