SRS Created to Assist Curb Social Ills

joseph

KOTA KINABALU– Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Tan Sri Joseph Kurup said the Voluntary Patrol Scheme or Skim Rondaan Sukarela (SRS) was created to assist the authorities curb crime and social ills in a community locality, regardless of the racial background.

He said SRS was established under Section 15 until Section 21, Part III of the Rukun Tetangga Act 2012, to operate in the Rukun Tetangga (RT) areas and it encouraged direct community involvement of residents aged not less than 18 in voluntary patrols.

Kurup said the setting up of SRS was to ultimately create a peaceful, conducive and harmonious living environment.

“This was a planned and organised initiative by the federal government since the establishment of Rukun Tetangga in 1975. All the SRS members do voluntary patrolling for the safety and interest of the local community.

“If there is any body formed outside the law, it can create conflict and jeopardise community unity and harmony,” he said in a statement, here, today.

Kurup said to ensure the objectives of establishing the SRS were met, both the SRS and RT sectors always collaborated with government agencies and non-governmental organisations based on the existing laws and Rukun Tetangga Act 2012.
