KOTA KINABALU: Loud booming sound and streak of light over the West Coast night sky that ended up in an explosion around midnight sparked frenzy speculations in the social media.
First came an audio recording of a man supposedly fishing somewhere around Tamparuli claiming to have seen a large fiery object the size of a barrel falling from the sky like a shooting star or meteor.
Shortly after that, the voice claimed hearing a loud explosion and reckoned the object might have fallen somewhere after Kota Belud, supposedly to explain the tremors felt by many.
Then in another whatsapp group screenshots of Facebook posts claiming the loud sound was heard by the folks near Matunggong appeared.
Also being circulated was a video clip purportedly showing the object shooting across the sky but the video was actually a footage of an actual meteor in Alabama, US.
Then there was a speculation that the loud sound was the sonic boom of a fighter jet and the streak of light was the machine’s afterburner.
The presence of USS Essex, a US Navy amphibious assault ship currently anchored at Likas Bay further fueled the speculations.
Having recently completed the 24th iteration of Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) between Malaysia and U.S, USS Essex has the capability of carrying F-35B stealth lightning strike fighter jets and Harrier II attack aircraft.
Could it be that a fighter jet have taken off from the USS Essex? But as the night goes by so did the rife discussions.-SabahNewsToday
