KOTA KINABALU: Comprehensive services provided by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has made it a preferred one-stop centre for world-class occupational safety and health (OSH) training programmes.
Chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said NIOSH subsidiary, NIOSH Certification Sdn Bhd, also offers auditing, certification and accreditation services for local organisations which follow the international standards.
He said the implementation of the management system standard would not only benefit the organisations involved and their employees but also the local community and the nation.
“With the implementation of management system standard, the organisations are able to monitor, measure and validate their performance systematically and effectively,” he said after presenting the management system certifications to organisations that had met the standards set by the authorities here today.
Six companies received new certification while three obtained the recertification from NIOSH Certification.
Also present were NIOSH Certification board member Nik Hasbi Fathi Nik Husain Fathi, NIOSH Certification general manager Syamsul Zahrin Zainuddin and Standards Malaysia Accreditation director Shaharul Sadri Alwi.
Lee said the certification would create a higher standard of management practice, which would eventually result in better overall performance.
According to him, NIOSH Certification had been recognised as a certification body that was accredited by Standards Malaysia.
Lee said NIOSH Certification had issued more than 100 certifications to various government and private organisations to date while NIOSH has successfully trained more than 120,000 individuals each year in various OSH-related programmes.
“NIOSH certification has also opened its regional office in Kota Kinabalu on August 1, 2016 to provide efficient services for the industry in Sabah and Sarawak,” he said.
He said the management teams who received the certifications proved that they were committed to implement the high standards in their organisations, including on OSH, quality of work and products and also on the preservation of the environment.
To meet the demands from the industry, NIOSH Certification also offers internationally-recognised ISO45001 certification and other certifications in different fields such as Quality Management System (ISO 9001), Environment (ISO 14001), Food Safety (ISO 22000) and Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MS 2530).
He said ISO 45001 was the first Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHS MS) certificate issued by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) on March 12, 2018 and companies which had obtained the OHSAS18001 were given a 3-year period before 12 March, 2021 to obtain ISO 45001.
“NIOSH Certification is willing to provide services and collaborate with plantation and mill owners and associations in the oil palm sector to obtain MSPO certification by the end of 2019 as targeted by the government,” he said.
He said NIOSH Certification had also been approved by the Malaysian Palm Oil Certification Council as a training centre for MSPO auditors in June 2018.-SabahNewsToday
