KOTA KINABALU: The Avian Influenza virus detected in the poultry farm in Kampung Kauluan, Tamparuli is the H5N1 variant, which is zoonotic meaning it can be transferred from animal to humans but so far there have been no such cases found in the affected area.

State Health Director, Datuk Dr Christina Rundi also assured that the Health Department and the Veterinary Services Department are well prepared to face an outbreak of Avian Influenza or bird flu.

“We have conducted simulations every year so we are prepared. We have the necessary action plans in place in the event of an outbreak,” she said when met after officiating at the State-level World Breastfeeding Week celebration at the Federal Administrative Complex multi-purpose hall near here, today.

She also said the case in Kampung Kauluan was isolated and that it should not be blown out of proportion to the extent causing negative impact to the state, in general.

On the other hand, Dr Christina advised the public noticing incidents of fowls dying in their area to report it to the relevant authorities so that immediate action to check the cause can be taken.

Meanwhile, the culling of fowls in the poultry farms in Kampung Kauluan and those within one kilometer radius by the Veterinary Services Department is on going.-SabahNewsToday
