KOTA KINABALU: The Wildlife Department manage to capture an injured male sun bear, two days after it was reported entering and exiting a house in Kampung Abai, Kinabatangan.
Sabah Wildlife Department Public Relations Officer, Siti Nur’ain Ampuan Acheh in a statement today said following the report on Sept 18 a team comprising staff from the department and Bornean Sunbear Conservation Centre headed by Dr Nabila Sarkawi went to the site to assess the situation.
The team decided to install a sun bear trap near the house on Sept 20 and barely three hours afterwards, the sun bear entered into the trap.
A physical examination on the sun bear weighing at 40 kilogramme found an injury on the front side of its left foot, believed to be self-inflicted based on the condition of the cut and no foul play was suspected.
The bear was then brought to the Bornean Sunbear Conservation Centre, Sepilok, Sandakan for further treatment.
The Wildlife Department planned to release it back to the wild at Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary when it has fully recovered from the injury.
Meanwhile, efforts to capture the sun bear that attacked a farmer in Entilibon were still on going.
The trap was installed 28 days ago in a forest near the area where the sun bear attacked had attacked the farmer.-SabahNewsToday
