KOTA KINABALU: Sabah celebrated this year’s World Orangutan’s Day with the inaugural Amazing Orangutan Challenge: Just How Well Do You Know Your Orangutans?” at Likas Bay Public Park here Sunday.
Jointly-organised by Sri Pelancongan Sabah (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sabah Tourism Board), WWF-Malaysia, and Sabah Wildlife Department, it attracted 188 participants that formed a total of 47 four-member including a few travel agencies as well as Sabah media fraternity.
Tourism, Culture and Environment Assistant Minister Assaffal P. Alia accompanied by Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datu Rusmadi Datu Sulai and Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai flagged off the challenge at 7am on Sunday.
Also on hand were Sabah Wildlife Director, Augustine Tuuga, WWF Head of Conservation (Sabah) Dr John Tay, Sabah Tourism Board General Manager, Suzaini Datuk Sabdin Ghani and Sri Pelancongan Sabah Sdn Bhd General Manager, Zachary Mobijohn.
After the flag-off it was game on as teams raced to the various pitstop along the Likas Bay jogging track where they were required to solve five challenges designed to further improve their understanding of the orangutans.
Team members were challenged on their general knowledge of the Bornean orangutan species, as well as physical and problem-solving skills, among others.
Team Supa Apes emerged as the fastest team to clear all five challenges while Njor Run came in second and Sunduvan Athletes, third.
Teo Chen Lung, Eric Tai Man Hiung, Foo Jit Siang and Jamais Junim who made up of team Supa Apes, they won four AirAsia return air tickets Kota Kinabalu-Bangkok, 3D2N stay in Manukan Villa at Manukan Island with Full Board Meal and Return Boat Transfer for four people sponsored by Sutera Sanctuary Lodges as well as RM800 cash.
The first-runner up, Njor Run comprising of Voo Tze Fung, Mohammad Izzat Muhaimin Bin Mohd Kamil, Mardini Bin Nurdin and Justin Bin Madina bagged a 2D1N stay in Garden Lodge at Kinabalu Park with Breakfast for four people sponsored by Sutera Sanctuary Lodges as well as RM600 cash.
Sunduvan Athletes made up of Afif Shafie Bin Abd Samad, Lai Fan Chung, Gerard Benedict and
Herbert Leslie Jonioh for their efforts took home a 2D1N stay in River Lodge at Poring Hot Spring with Breakfast for four people sponsored by Sutera Sanctuary Lodges and cash RM500.
According to Sri Pelancongan Sabah, as a contribution from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah, 10 per cent from the registration fees was donated to WWF-malaysia for the Orangutan Forest Restoration Programme.
Due to the dwindling numbers of orangutans threatened by loss of habitat, besides forest restoration programmes, another crucial aspect would be to generate greater awareness on the plight of the Bornean orangutans and which this event hoped to have achieved.
