LABUAN: Young generation are urged to practice eco-friendly lifestyles such as the 3R concept (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) which is a simple yet effective method to keep the environment clean.

Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Datuk Seri Maximus Ongkili, said the culture needs to be practiced by the young generation especially when they are still studying.

“Many simple approaches can be practiced in our daily lives such as utilizing electricity and water prudently in hostels and academic facilities, and to turn off the lights and fans when not in use, and also to tightly shut the water pipe to prevent water from being wasted.

“Recycling with the 3R concept is also an effort which may seen as trivial and too simple but it is effective, which we can practice daily. University students are also encouraged to use biodegradable containers at the cafeteria,” he said.

Maximus who is also the chairman of Board of Trustees of the Malaysian Green Foundation gave his speech for officiating the Green Youth Programme by Malaysian Green Foundation at Centre 1 Lecture Hall, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Labuan International Campus.

Also present at the event is the Chief Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Datuk Loo Took Gee, and UMS Labuan International Campus Vice Director, Prof. Madya Dr. Geoffrey Harvey Tanakinjal who represent the Director Prof. Madya Dr. Murnizam Halik.

Maximus also asks for Labuan International Campus students to play their roles in practicing eco-friendly lifestyles to make the National Green Technology Policy a success. – SayangSabah
