KUALA LUMPUR: After going out with a man she just got to know four days earlier through the WeChat application, a woman lost her handbag to the new acquaintance.
However, the man’s action proved costly, as he was fined RM3,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here, today.
Magistrate Nur Azura Murah handed down the sentence to Muhammad Amiruliqram Jafri, 20, after he pleaded guilty to stealing a handbag belonging to Wan Nor Hidayah Wan Mohd Amin, 21, which contained a purse with RM70 cash in it, two mobile phones and two wrist watches, all worth RM1,400.
The court also ordered the accused to serve five months in prison if he failed to pay the fine. He paid the fine. Muhammad Amiruliqram was charged with committing the offense by the roadside at Jalan Sembilang, beside the Petronas Station on Jalan Tenaga, Cheras, here, at 2pm, on July 28.

According to the facts, Muhammad Amiruliqram, who was meeting the victim for the first time, had invited her to go out with him.
On the way, the accused, who was driving the car, stopped at a petrol station and asked the victim to buy some sweets, giving her RM4.
However, as soon as the victim returned from buying the sweets, she found the accused had fled with her purse in the car.
Muhammad Amiruliqram, who represented himself, appealed to the court to sentence him to a fine as he needed to take care of his family.
Deputy public prosecutor Ezrene Zakariah asked the court to sentence the accused with a sentence befitting the crime, so that the accused would not
