ALOR SETAR: It is up to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to take immediate actions on the current political crisis in Kedah, said Kedah UMNO Liaison Committee deputy chairman Datuk Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah.
He said the crisis could not be allowed to drag on as UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN) needed to be ready to face the general election soon.
He said his group was prepared to accept any decision by Najib who is also UMNO president based on the prerogatives vested in him.
Commenting on rumours that he will be appointed as the menteri besar, Ahmad Bashah said it was up to Najib as party president to decide who was the new menteri besar to replace Datuk Seri Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir.
“It is up to the party president, we will support whoever becomes the menteri besar. We have confidence in his wisdom,” he said when met by reporters at the Sultan Abdul Halim Airport here today.
The political atmosphere in Kedah has heated up in the last few days when Mukhriz came under pressure from several Kedah state assemblymen and members of Parliament as well as UMNO senior state leaders led by Ahmad Bashah who openly voiced they had lost confidence in Mukhriz as Menteri Besar and state UMNO Liaison Committee chairman.
Following that, Mukhriz stressed that he would remain as Menteri Besar so long as his services were needed by the people of Kedah.
The crisis continued when Ahmad Bashah and a majority of the Kedah UMNO leadership held a meeting with Najib at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), Kuala Lumpur yesterday to demand Mukhriz’s resignation.
Commenting on their meeting with Najib yesterday, Ahmad Bashah said the meeting yesterday did not mention any name for the new menteri besar.
According to him, the meeting went on calmly in a family spirit but all of them were serious in wanting a change for the good of the state UMNO.
“We feel the time has come for a change, as we are no longer confident in facing the election, more so the decision was voiced by 14 of 15 division heads,” he said.- BERNAMA
