KOTA KINABALU: All participants of the Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan (UNK) this year are advised to have in-depth understanding of the traditional costumes of the ethnic or district that they represented.
Sabah 2016 UNK Chairperson, Joanna Datuk Kitingan, said patterns on traditional costumes belonged to certain ethnic have their own meaning.
“Contestants can understand these aspects if they asked the elders who have more knowledge on ethnic heritage,” she said.
She was speaking during the briefing for the state level UNK district committee chairpersons at GC Woolley Hall of Sabah Museum, today.
She said with the UNK’s theme this year ‘Embrace Your Culture, Speak Your Mother Language’, each participant will be evaluated based on their fluency in using their mothertongue.
Joanna also calls for programme coordinators to hold a special class to teach local language in their district as to improve the KadazanDusun Murut (KDM) communities’ proficiency in their own language. -SayangSabah
