KOTA KINABALU: UMS improved by 72 ranks to become the 173rd best university in the world, according to the UI-GreenMetric World University Ranking 2015.
UMS Vice Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah, said the improvement is the highest compared to the university’s previous rank of 245 in the past year.
“The achievement is something to be proud of for UMS community, who are in the right track to achieve greater success in the future,” he said.
He said UMS can further improve its ranking through its numerous efforts, especially in activities related to campus sustainability and environment management.
“Many environmental activities have been launched, such as efficient energy management and the improvement in facility utilization, as well as bicycle uses in campus. We also hold teaching activities and researches on environment conservation and protection.
“The setting up of the recycling centre in campus and the practice of Ecofarm are also seen to be able to become part of the university’s strength in increasing it’s ranking this year,” he added.
407 universities from 66 countries participated in the UI-GreenMetric World University Ranking 2015 that was announced recently, compared to last year’s participation of 360 universities from 52 countries.
Currently UMS is ranked 7th for public and private universities in Malaysia, with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) at the top. –SayangSabah
