KUALA LUMPUR: The increasing cost of living continues to be the focus of delegates participating in the debate on the policy speech by the UMNO Youth leader at the movement’s general assembly today.
They urged the government to take steps to help reduce the people’s burden. Bukit Bintang UMNO Youth leader Jefree Zain Affendi Dan Yunus, when debating the motion on economy, forwarded several suggestions, including to extend the 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BRIM) to urban residents with monthly income of not more than RM4,000.
“This is because urban residents, with that amount of salary is still categorised as urban poor and they are being burdened further with the toll hike and increase in public transport fares,” he added.
Jefree Zain Affendi also urged the government to make easier for the people to own affordable homes.
Meanwhile, Tanjung Malim Umno Youth leader Mohamad Amin Othman, who is representing Perak UMNO Youth, wanted the government to also look into the interests of residents in the rural and Felda areas, who have all the while been staunch UMNO supporters.
“We do not want their support for UMNO to shift and as such, it is apt for several agencies to help them, like giving incentives for them to carry out business or venture into economic activities to improve their economy,” he added.
He said the government should also help to overcome the housing problem facing the second Felda generation.
