KOTA KINABALU: The Cabinet has decided to go through with the construction of Ulu Padas Hydro-Electric dam project which will be carried out by a group company and expected to begin this year.
Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Datuk Dr. Maximus Ongkili, said the construction of the dam is important to ensure enough electricity supply for Sabah in the next ten years.
“The federal government through the national electricity planning committee and the state government are scheduled to hold a meeting at the middle of this month to further discuss about the project,” he said to the media after attending the SESB breaking of fast ceremony at Promenade Hotel.
The dam project, costing RM1.4 billion, will supply electricity and functions as flood deterrent for the surrounding areas especially in Beaufort.
“The federal government hopes that this project will be carried out as soon as possible; before January next year,” he said, adding that Sabah contractors have been selected to begin the project.
He also said the government and SESB have identified the strategic site for the project which is far from any settlement. – SayangSabah
