KOTA KINABALU – The biggest international Ultimate Frisbee tournament in Borneo is back for its 6th year running; and for the first time will be a two-day event with more international players than before.

The tournament will be held on March 21 and 22 at the SUKMA fields in Likas, Kota Kinabalu.  The theme this year is “Huck It Like It’s Hot” and players are encouraged to bring hip hop style to their game.

“Due to the overwhelming feedback we received from previous years, we had to expand the tournament to a two-day affair. We are excited to bring this level of intensity, competitiveness and international experience to local players in the region,” said tournament director Dinoza Mahruf.

More than 200 participants will be playing in the Borneo Headhunters Hat 2015, an increase from 170 in the past year, with players from the United States of America, Australia, Canada, Britain, Netherlands, New Zealand, Brunei, Hong Kong, Beijing, Dubai and Singapore.

The tournament, which started in 2010 as a local tournament to raise awareness among Sabahans, has grown by leaps and bounds in Sabah and earned a reputation for being one of the most well-organised and popular tournament of its kind in the region.

“The growth we have seen for this tournament, and the sport here has been very encouraging. Every year, popularity, as well as Sabah as an international destination, has grown.

“We have some high-level players who will be here, and the way the tournament is structured, many newer players will be exposed to a different playing style and learn a lot from their teammates over the two day period,” said Dinoza.

The tournament has consistently attracted travellers to the State who are intrigued by the concept of coming to Borneo, as well as repeat participants who have been coming for the last few years.

Online registration for the tournament filled up within one day of opening, reaching its capacity of 210 participants just a few hours.

“We think that people are not only attracted to the tournament because of the nature of the sport, which tends to attract like-minded people with a thirst for adventure and fun, but also because Kota Kinabalu is a destination worth visiting,” said Dinoza.

Players will be flying in from all over Asia, as well as Dubai, where another global Ultimate tournament will be taking place on March 8 to 13 , for the love of the sport and to enjoy tourist attractions in Sabah.

Players will often end up complementing their visit with a climb up Mount Kinabalu, island hopping, scuba diving, white water rafting as well as other tourist attractions in Sabah.

Ultimate frisbee is one the fastest growing sport in the world played by men and women of all ages. Fast paced, fun and and action-packed, Ultimate frisbee is a non-contact sport involving the use of a frisbee disc that combines the exciting aspects of soccer, football, basketball and netball. It has been played regularly in Kota Kinabalu for some eight years.

As a “Hat” tournament, participants sign up as individuals and are asked to honestly rate themselves accordingly to their disc handling skills, speed, knowledge of the game and experience. The organising committee then forms teams with the pool of participants, distributing skills as evenly as possible.

The format promotes camaraderie and friendships and evens the playing field for all teams.

Members of the public are invited to watch.
