SEMPORNA: Tourism-related activities in the district is on the mend, following security measures fuelled by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom).
Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Afdal said this was reflected by the increasing number of local and foreign tourists returning to the district.
In this regard, he urged the local communities to continue giving close cooperation to Esscom in boosting security which in turn, would give confidence to local and foreign tourists to visit the district.
Speaking to reporters after a gathering here today, Mohd Shafie, who is also Semporna member of parliament, said the move by the government to set up Esscom, and the continuous efforts to boost its role, enabled security to be enhanced on the eastern side of Sabah.
Therefore, he said it was crucial for local residents to support the authorities, specifically on the implementation of curfew in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone.
Meanwhile, he cautioned MARA-sponsored students against being involved in the activities of the so-called IS militant group.
He said IS actions must be severely condemned as the militant group acted beyond religious limits.
“The students must focus on education and not involve in any activity, even in the name of martyrdom, as its (IS) practices are not true Islamic teachings, since religion does not condone killing,” he added. – BERNAMA
