Three stages to be prepared for floods

KOTA KINABALU – Three stages of being prepared for floods have to be employed mainly before, during and after.

However, mappings have to be improved and implemented to ensure that flood mitigation is applied well by all concerned.

Minister of Community Development and Consumer Affairs, Datuk Jainab Datuk Seri Panglima Ahmad Ayid  said in this respect they have to identify areas that are flood prone so that everyone that are potentially affected are ready to get into act.

According to her Kota Marudu, Beaufort and Kinabatangan have been chosen for the establishment of a depot port which would be used as a store and food bank.

Sharing her meeting with  Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim, yesterday, she said they already have flood committee members in charge of such situations before a flood phase.

She also said the Public Works Department  (PWD) will also be helping to mitigate the flash flood and several immediate solutions to prevent the flash floods from happening again.

Jainab also mentioned that they will be starting to provide a talk in all schools on the flood preparedness.

“School children will also be accorded talks to ensure that they know which part they should be avoiding or doing during such occurrences,” she said.

Simulation of flash flood will be held in Tawau on March 30. The programme is expected to be attended by district officer from every district with Second Sabah Social Welfare Department (SSWD) staff.- By Saila Saidie/Sayangsabah
