KOTA KINABALU:  When the Babagon Dam was mooted for construction many years ago, it was considered a bane to the populace in that area.

The creation of this new dam has also evoked similar response from the people there.

“The dam is not to create problems for these people; our intentions is to help more than a million people that will be using the water and this includes the people that are affected,” Minister of Infrastructure Development Tan Sri Joseph Pairin said.

“There may be a slight problem and some controversy now but we need to focus and see the benefits that Kaiduan dam can bring to the people as a whole,” he said.

Pairin disclosed in Australia and other developed country; the scarcity of water surface/catchment and depletion of rivers have made them tap into seawater desalination.

This innovation is where the salt from the seawater is being removed to produce fresh water for human consumption. – By Fizah Yusof/SayangSabah
