KOTA KINABALU: Balung assemblyman Datuk Syed Abas Syed Ali has been appointed as the new Speaker of the Sabah state legislative assembly.
Syed Abas, 68, takes over as the ninth Speaker of the assembly from Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Tun Said Keruak who has been appointed as the new Minister of Communication and Multimedia following the federal cabinet reshuffle on July 28.
The appointment of Syed Abas as the state assembly Speaker was announced by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman in a statement today. Musa said Syed Abas was expected to assume the post as new Speaker on Friday.
“He has vast experience in politics and government and has held key positions in government agencies and government-link companies (GLCs),” he said.
Syed Abas was born on October 12, 1947 and holds a Bachelors of Science (Hons) in Applied Economics from East London University.
Currently he holds the post of chairman of Warisan Harta Sabah Sdn Bhd.
He was elected as Balung assemblyman from 1978 till 1981 under the Berjaya administration and from 2004 till present under the UMNO ticket.
Syed Abas began his career in public service in 1976 as the industrial development officer in the Ministry of Industrial Development. He has held various posts in different capacities, including as Ko-Nelayan
chairman, Sabah Finance Berhad director and Majlis Ugama Islam Sabah (Muis) chairman .
He is married to Datin Nuraini Habib Kadir and has six children.-BERNAMA
