SANDAKAN: Fire and Rescue Department Malaysia(JBPM) urged the relevant authority to take swift action to tackle illegal electricity connections.
Its Sabah Director, Nordin Fauzi, said the move is important to prevent further unwanted incidents in the future which will endanger the lives of firefighters and other enforcement officers during rescue operations.
“In this matter, I urge for immediate actions against illegal electricity connection,” he said during his visit to the family of the late Apolos Jeromos at Duchess of Kent Hospital.
Apolos, aged 25, died when he was accidentally electrocuted in an operation to extinguish forest fire with other personnel at a three hectare area at Taman Kenari Bt 7, yesterday.
“His passing is a huge loss for Sabah JBPM. He is part of the STORM Special Team that was involved in the Ops Gempa Bumi in Ranau recently,” he added.
According to him, initial investigation by JBPM personnel has found the illegal wiring in the incident was connected from a pump house to a nearby squatters settlement.
Meanwhile, he said the welfare of the late Apolos’ next of kin will be handled by JBPM which includes the qualification for ex-gratia from JBPM Welfare Fund Group.
“Hopefully his (Apolos) family will remain strong during this hardship, especially his pregnant wife,” he said. -SayangSabah
