ALOR SETAR: The government will not restore the subsidy for Super Tempatan 15 (ST15) rice which was scrapped in October, said Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek.
He said the move was to get ST15 rice off the shelves as its price did not differ much from that of better quality rice such as ST5.
“In this regard, the people particularly those in the lower income bracket will no longer have to choose between consuming the low quality rice and good quality rice. They will buy better quality rice and eventually there will no longer be any demand for ST15,” he told a media conference after a dinner last night, in conjunction with MADA Corp’s 40th anniversary.
Ahmad Shabery said the ST15 rice was introduced by the government in 2008 during the food crisis and that the measure was no longer relevant.
He said the ministry was also studying some proposals for submission to the Finance Ministry for special aid to be given to households earning a monthly income of RM850 and below, to ease their expenses in buying rice.- BERNAMA
