GEORGE TOWN: The government plans to open a stevia farm for commercial use in the country, Deputy Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi
Yahaya said today.
He said the move would also reduce the country’s import of stevia from China to meet the demand from beverage manufacturers who were replacing sugar with stevia in their products.
“As we know, sugar is the main contributor of diabetes. It will be good if we shift to using stevia because the there is no change in the taste of the
drinks and is also good for health,” he added.
He told this to reporters after the breaking of fast at the Barat Daya police station here yesterday.
Stevia is a natural sweetener and does not contain calorie. It can help reduce sugar level in the blood, reduce blood pressure and also body weight.
Earlier, Barat Daya police chief Supt Lai Fah Hin and Hilmi distributed “duit Raya” and hampers to 66 recipients, consisting of orphans, widows, special children, police retirees and general workers.-BERNAMA
