KOTA KINABALU: A Filipino was sentenced to seven years jail by the Sessions Court today for stealing an item belonged to a foreign tourist.
Rondign Muharam, 22, pleaded guilty to stealing a Samsung Galaxy camera from a 52-year-old Englishwoman, in 25 August, around 11.45am, near Waterfront here.
Rondigon was charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code which carries a punishment of seven years jail, a fine, or both, if found guilty.
Based on the case fact, the accused was tailing the victim before snatching her camera and fled by jumping into the sea with the stolen item.
A friend of the victim’s son then rushed to the Waterfront Police Booth to seek help.
The accused was still in the water when the police reached the crime scene by boat and successfully apprehended him along with the camera.
The judge, Ainul Shahrin Mohamad, also ordered for Rondigon to be deported back to his home country.
In mitigation, the accused asked for a lighter punishment and requested to be sent back to his country.
