STA to focus on young talents

KOTA KINABALU: Discovering young talents is the Sabah Tennis Association (STA) focus this year.

STA president Johnson Koh, this would be carried out through tournaments starting from  Sandakan in March, Kota Kinabalu (June) and Tawau  in August.

The  top 12 players from the three legs will qualify for the master junior to be held in Kota Kinabalu in November Koh said adding that, the Tennis Malaysia junior age group tournament involving players from peninsula will be held in August 20-23 in Kota Kinabalu.

Tennis Malaysia is a group of state tennis associations formed to assist Lawn Tennis Association of Malaysia (LTAM) to organise junior tennis tournament across the country, he shared.

“The group funded by chairman cum Kuala Lumpur Tennis Association president Mirzan Mahathir will takes turn to host the tournament starting in Negri Sembilan in early March before Pahang (March 19-22),  Malacca  (April 2-5), Johor (April 23-26), Perlis (May 7-10), Selangor (June 1-3), Sabah (August 20-23), Terengganu (September 19-22), Perak (October 22-25) and Kedah (November 26-29)”.

“The masters will be held in Kuala Lumpur in December where top 16 players will meet the top ranking Malaysian junior including Christian Didier Chin who is ranked number one in the under-14 Asia junior last year in each age group category from 8 to 18-years-old, he said, adding Sabah will host the tournament on August 20-23.”

The Asian top junior players will converge to Kota Kinabalu on September 7-13 to face-off in the Asia Tennis Federation 14 and under, he said.

The LTAM has set their eyes to compete in several tours this year namely BMW Malaysia National Circuit on February 7-11 in Kuala Lumpur; pre-qualifying Junior Davis Cup Asia/Oceania in March (Sarawak); 8th Malacca ITF International Junior Championship on March 2-7 in Malacca; Nan Ying Cup International Junior Championship on March 10-15 in Taipei; 51st Brunei ITF Junior Circuit on March 10-15 in Brunei; Speaker Cup International Junior Championship on March 17-22 in Taipei; China Chengdu 5 & 6 Junior on March 24-29 & April 4 in China and Australian Junior Davis Cup 2015 Asia/Oceania final qualifying on April 6-11.-By Bosco Wong/Sayangsabah.
