SANDAKAN: Sixty-three junior players from all over Sabah participated in the first leg of the Sabah Tennis Junior tour here.

Players from Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, Keningau and Sandakan took part in the three-day event under the Sabah Tennis Association (STA) junior tour of Sabah.

Sandakan is the first leg on March 15-17, Kota Kinabalu second leg on June 12-14 and Tawau the third leg on August 20-23 before the master year end final leg on November 20-22 in Kota Kinabalu.

On the ongoing first leg tour in Sandakan, most of the  10-14 year juniors are accompanied by parents or coaches.

The tournament has reached the semi finals stage where in the Boys 18 under : Mohd Arif Irfan  (Kota Kinabalu) vs PevanrajSingh Kreer (Kota Kinabalu ); and Timothy Wong (Kota Kinabalu) vs Nik Ahmad ( Sandakan).   Boys 10 semi-final Shan Danial (Kota Kinabalu) vs  Mohd Rasydan (Keningau)  and Kevin Keith vs Adam Hamzie (Kota Kinabalu).

Girls 16 under has been won by Nurshaneem Iman Shamsuddin beating Caren Chang 8-4 in the final. Both representing Kota Kinabalu. The other matches are still in progress.

The big turned out is a very promising sign for Sabah junior tennis. Hopefully all the legs will get full participation.

STA president Johnson Koh visited the tournament venue to give the players and parents encouragement.

He is impressed with the positive participation and the parents turn out to support their kids. He thanked the parents and organizers for the positive attitudes.

State coach Tito Latoja also was on ground to scout for talent among the players.

Tournament referee Rohzan Daud, said the matches went on as schedule and the weather is fine so far and hope all will be smooth sailing until Tuesday when the matches completed. -Sayangsabah.
