KOTA KINABALU: Speakers and presiding officers must be committed in bringing democracy to the international communication system and increase the parliament’s role in handling cross border issues which are faced by many countries today, said the President of Dewan Negara, Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang.
He said speakers who are also presiding officers uphold the important responsibility in achieving and preserving a healthy parliamentary democracy.
“There are many things that must be done in understanding the mould of democracy in the country, and in facing the challenges to preserve parliamentary democracy in this globalized era,” he said.
He was speaking during the dinner gala event for the 23rd Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of Commonwealth at Grand Ballroom, Hotel Magellan Sutera Harbour, yesterday.
He also said the dinner event will give speakers and presiding officers the opportunity to interact and make new network.
An effective communication network between parliaments across the world, he said, is one of the approach in preserving nation’s reputation and bilateral understanding. -SayangSabah
