KOTA KINABALU – The South Korean music phenomenon is ablaze in Malaysia.

Malaysians enjoy watching K-Drama and listening to the infectious tune of K-POP. Some of us sees Korean as a new interesting culture and in Sabah the Korean culture is slowly blending into the community.

When guests come to Kota Kinabalu, they can see several Korean restaurants and groceries stores. The influences from Korean culture is highly correlated with the increasing number of tourists from South Korea to Sabah. Some of them even choose Sabah as their second home.

On Saturday March, 28; Sabahans will have the chance to watch the international renowned Korean Opera that will perform at the first ever Opera Gala Friendship Concert between Malaysia and Korea.

The enthralling concert will be held at the Sabah Cultural Centre in Penampang at 8 pm.

Our very own Jesselton Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) is given the honour to collaborate with world class musicians and vocalists brought by the Asia Pacific Opera Development Committee with a total of 54 pieces leads by world class conductor.

Audience can be wowed by the empowering and high-calibre performance from this rare collaboration. The orchestra will be playing 20 songs from classic to pop music.

The Chairman of the Asia Pacific Opera Development Committee, Bae Kyoung Yul said the concert is one of the platform to strengthen the close relationship between Malaysia and South Korea.

“This programme will serve as a medium to nurture common understanding, foster cultural exchange and further promote opera music between both countries,” he said to the reporters during the concert preview for the media last night.

Bae also stated that they are keen to learn the traditional music of Malaysia which he said a unique and interesting kind of music for them to explore.

The Opera concert is in line with the aims of the Sabah Government to foster friendship between Malaysia and Korea through the exchange of cultural and performing arts.

The inaugural concert supported by the State’s tourism, culture and environment ministry, cultural board and art gallery.
