SOP systemization in flood evacuation centre necessary: Rohani

KOTA KINABALU: The systemization of Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) at the flood evacuation centres across the country is crucial for feasible aid relief  to  flood victims.

Minister of Women, Family, and Community Development, Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim said the government will examine every possibility in the restructuring of SOP in every state to make the management and aid support in the evacuation centres  proceed smoothly.

We (Ministry of Women, Family, and Community Development) under the Department of Social Welfare are given the responsibility to manage the victims at the evacuation centres.”

“We will oversee the compatibility in restructuring the SOP and also in improving the flood crisis management system at the evacuation centres to ensure its relevance in dealing with floods disasters in the future,” she said in a press conference here, yesterday.

Also present was the Minister of Community Development and Consumer Affairs, Datuk Jainab Ahmad.

According to Rohani, a systematic management for natural disasters is crucial in before, present, and after the flood to ensure aid relief operations can proceed efficiently.

“Floods is a sudden disaster. We will not know when it will happen but with early preparation and clear SOP, we will not panic, and we can do our responsibility.

“During the recent floods, we receive many responses from the public, and we will improve every weaknesses,” she said.

Rohani also said that evacuation centres will prepare a proper place for mothers and women for changing clothes and breastfeeding in the future to make it more comfortable for them.

“We will also deploy counselors in every flood evacuation centres to help plan appropriate programmes for the victims to fill their free times.

“The programmes are important to make sure they will not feel bored and to reduce the flood victims’ emotional stress,” she said.

Supporting Rohani’s recommendation, Jainab said it will not only for floods but also for other disasters situation.

“Early preparation in facing natural disasters such as floods is important to enable us to proceed with rescue operations of the flood victims during and post-floods.

She hopes for the villagers who are affected even though they are not in the evacuation centres  to be be included in the flood victims list to receive aid relief. – SayangSabah
