KOTA KINABALU: The Asean Telecommunication Minister Meeting or TELMIN has agreed on a smart Asean agenda leveraging on ICT in moving towards achieving the development target in 2020.
Hence, ICT plays an important role for the development of countries, said Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairman Dato’ Sri Dr Halim Shafie.
“Through many initiatives, today our household broadband internet penetration has reached about 70.2 per cent, and many initiatives such as the introduction of ICT in schools, and the rural internet centres or PI1M, have been undertaken to widen awareness and promote competency development in ICT,” said Dr Halim.
He said this in his welcoming remarks on ‘International ICT Volunteers-2015 Boot Camp’ at a hotel yesterday. The programme was officiated by Korean Ambassador to Malaysia Cho Byungjae.
More than 300 volunteers from South Korea have been dispatched to countries in the Asian Pacific region since 2012. This year programme was hosted by Malaysia and it was jointly organised by MCMC, International Telecommunication Union and Korea’s National Information & Society Agency.-Sayangsabah
