TAMPARULI: SK Tiong Perungusan Tamparuli has been announced as the overall winner for the Nabalu Zone Cross Country competition, beating nine other schools who took part in the event.
The organizing chairperson cum SK Tomis Headmaster, Sudi Tangara, said ten schools have joined the first ever cross country competition held by the school.
“This include SK Bongol, SK Giok, SK Kelawat, SK Lokos, SK Rungus Nahaba, SK Sinulihan, SK Wasai, and SK Tomis. Thank you and congratulation to all sports teachers from Nabalu Zone for making this programme a success,” he said.
Meanwhile, the competition coordinator, Nikson Dauni, hopes for the cross country event to be held annually as to hone the hidden talents of primary school students and produce more athletes in the higher level.
He said the sports programme also close the ties between students and teachers from Nabalu Zone.
“I hope there are people or groups who will be willing in sponsoring prizes for this event in the future,” he added.
The 5km relay started from Kg. Tomis Lama to Kg Tiong Ratau, before returning back to the starting point.
Nikson said the location is strategic and safe thanks to the cooperation of local villagers.
“The success of this programme is due to the teamwork of teachers from Nabalu Zone and local villagers, he said, adding that 80 participants took part in the event where each school sent four athletes for the men and women categories respectively.
“The number of participants needs to be limited since this is the first time we hold such event. We hope to get more participants to join next time,” he said. –SayangSabah
