In his winding speech on the final day of State Legislative Assembly recent meeting, the Minister of Resource Development and Information Technology Datuk Siringan Gubat said that his ministry will continue the effort to promote the use of the internet in Sabah, particulary in the rural area. The establishment of e-Desa centres are a boon for the rural people as they no longer feel isolated and become more internet savvy. To date, there are 20 e-Desa centres in Sabah.
He also disclosed to the Assembly the programmes that his ministry will carry out this year which include a preliminary study on the establishment of the proposed Sabah Knowledge Park, organizing advance training and courses in ICT, strengthening the Techno Entrepreneurship programme and Arama-iT creative programme that consists of activities such as Osindak-iT, Digital Story Telling, ICT Fiesta, technorama-iT and many more.
According to Siringan, based on the information from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, the state’s broadband penetration rate as of 5th June 2013 is 55.9 per cent, still some way below the national rate at 66.7 per cent.
“We need to expand the area of coverage further and improve the overall service quality to ensure customer satisfaction. Paying for bad quality service, even if it’s only RM10, is expensive,” he said.
