KOTA KINABALU: The authority will open an investigation paper regarding on the shoot out incident off Pom-Pom Island, Semporna, in 30 June.
Sabah Deputy Police Commissioner, Datuk Awang Sahari EM Nadzeer, said at about 3.00am two security personnel detected the presence of a suspicious boat at the nation waters during their monitoring operation at the island’s sentry post.
“Our security team then shone light with their torchlight as a warning signal, but based on their (security personnel) statement, they were two shots fired from the boat direction,” he said to the media after the Kuih Raya Presentation to security forces at Auditorium Tun Ahmad Raffae, Menara Tun Mustapha.
Awang Sahari said following the suspects’ action the security personnel then responded by firing towards the boat as self defense and the shoot out happened for two minutes.
However, inspection carried out at the area in the next day has found no cases of injury or fatality, he added.
He explained that the estimated distance between the boat and sentry post at the island is 150m, adding that investigation will be launch on the incident.
“It is an incident that we think could be a misunderstanding; maybe we are not clear (on the issue), so we have to investigate,” he said. – SayangSabah
