KOTA KINABALU – Respect and tolerance must be empathised and practiced within the community.
“Celebrating Chinese New Year when you are not Chinese is respect and this will strengthen relationships among people of different racial, religious and cultural background. It is very meaningful,” Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal said during the Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Chinese New Year Open House at Airport View Hotel, here today.
Shafie added tolerance results in a stable and united as well as a peaceful to the community.
“It’s just pointless to have a rich country if there is instability and strife. Of course there will always be differences among us but it doesn’t mean our differences can lead to conflict, ” he said.
He explained that differences can open up respect and understanding among the people from diverse religious and racial backgrounds.
Meanwhile, when asked on the comment made by State Reform Party Sabah (STAR) chairman Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan to reject UMNO in Sabah; Shafie said he (Jeffrey) doesn’t have any say on the matter.
“It is not for him (Jeffrey) to determine on UMNO status in Sabah. It is for the rakyat to determine and it is proven with the last General Election where it indicates UMNO won for both at state and federal level,” he said.
Shafie who is the UMNO Vice President stated that UMNO had united the people.
“So, what’s important is that the people can see good rapport between UMNO and other component parties in BN and this have attract people’s support. If the people supported Star Sabah, they will be the government. But they are not,” he said. – By Fizah Yusof/SayangSabah
