JAKARTA: Seven people, five of them attackers and two civilians, were killed in bomb blasts at the Sarinah Mall here today.

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Luhut Pandjaitan said one of the two civilians was a Canadian national who was at the Starbucks Restaurant during the attack in Jalan MH Thamrin.

Thirteen people, including five policemen, were seriously injured in the attack that took place at 10.50am, he said.

Of the five dead attackers, three were shot by the police while the other two took their own lives, Luhut said at the scene.

He said a group of men wearing white shirts and cargo pants attacked the police beat base in Jalan Thamrin with firearms and bombs at 10.50am.

The police returned fire and shot dead three of them. The other two fled and killed themselves, one outside the Starbucks Restaurant at the Cakerawala Mall and the other inside, Luhut said.

So far, police have yet to verify whether the attackers were from any militant or deviant group.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo visited the scene of the attack at about 4pm and instructed the police to conduct a thorough investigation to eliminate terrorist activities in the country.

The road access to the Sarinah Mall has been reopened to traffic and the situation there seems to have returned to normal.

The public was allowed to move about freely although a special police force was stationed there.

Some of the shops and restaurants in the vicinity remained closed, with the operators citing security for having done so.

A restaurant worker who wished to be identified only as Deena said the employer had closed the eatery at 11am following the attack.- BERNAMA
