TAWAU: Sabah Minister of Youth and Sports, Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan calls on youth organisations in the state to establish their own fire and rescue team in their area.
This is important in the effort to assist in minor fire disasters before the arrival of the Fire Services and Rescue Department units.
“Sabah Youth and Sports officers must be proactive in encouraging the youths in the state to establish their own community fire and rescue team specifically in areas where access for the fire services is difficult,” he said, at the launching of Sabah JBPM level of Awareness and Safety for Fire and Road Traffic Campaign, for the Chinese New Year Season 2015, at Stesen Minyak Petronas Batu 2, Jalan Apas, here yesterday.
According to him, youth must always be prepared and cooperative with the Neighbourhood Watch (Rukun Tetangga) in order to become the front-line in assisting on any issues in their neighbourhood.
“If the community fire and rescue team exist, minor fire incidents can be handled effectively because participants will have been trained as they are required to attend fire extinguishing or fire control courses,” he said.
Tawfiq is confident that the campaign will produce positive impact in improving awareness in the society about the danger of fire and related accidents.
“It will help in preventing any fire disasters and road accidents, as we will be more alert to avoid any mishaps,” he added.
Sabah JBPM Director, Nordin Pauzi who is also present at the programme welcomes the recommendation, as it will benefit the department especially in high-risks areas.
“We also have our own volunteers (firefighters);along with the community fire and rescue teams which we encourage the community or youth organizations to establish,” he said.
Also present during the event is the President of Tawau Municipal Council, Datuk Ismail Mayakob. – SayangSabah
