GEORGE TOWN: Six senior citizens were among 27 beggars and vagrants rounded up by the Penang Social Welfare Department (JKM) under an integrated operation at three locations here early today.
The oldest among the senior citizens was aged 73.
The department director, Said Sidup said the total number of beggars and vagrants comprised 21 men, including an Indonesian immigrant and six women.
“They were believed to have been begging and sleeping in the areas we raided as they are homeless. The integrated operation which began at midnight covered the Tun Abdul Razak Complex, vicinity of Kapitan Keling and Lebuh Leith,” he told reporters here today.
He said that since January, the state JKM conducted 167 operations and rescued more than 500 beggars and vagrants.- BERNAMA
