KOTA KINABALU:  August 8 has been selected as the symbolic date for the re-opening of the trail from Timpohon Gate to Laban  Rata, as early as 8.00am for 88 climbers selected by the Sabah Parks (SP).

Its Director, Dr. Jamili Nais, said the opening will be officiated by the state Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Masidi Manjun, this Saturday.

“This Saturday we will re-open bookings for climbers. However, we will only allow climbing activity up to Laban Rata only. Before this 1 September, we must ensure that the trail is safe 100 percent, where barriers will be installed if rockslides occurred.

“We will also bring climbers to see for themselves the repaired trail route this Saturday. They will be at Laban Rata for several hours and climb down at the same day,” he said when met by the media during the Raya Open House by the state Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environemtn, at Penampang Cultural Centre.

Jamili said climbers will also be brought to Panar Laban, which was seriously damaged by the earthquake disaster.

“We will not disturb the site for the purpose of being a tourist attraction. Climbers will be brought there to visit the place,” he said, adding that Sabah Parks still maintain its fees for hikers.

However, its enforcement and amount will only be decided after the meeting of Sabah Parks Board of Trustees in 20 August, he explained. – SayangSabah
