KOTA KINABALU: The 2015 Sabah International Folklore Festival (SIFF) with the theme of ‘Marriage’ and expected to be held from 10 to 15 August will present various cultural performances and activities for the public.
The five-day festival also receive the participation of Russia and Slovakia in the international folklore dance competition, competing against 15 other countries including Malaysia in 13 August at Sabah Cultural Centre, Penampang.
The state Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Masidi Manjun, said SIFF main objective is to give exposure and increase knowledge on various cultural heritages among the participating countries.
“The event is also to promote the uniqueness of culture and arts of various ethnics and the state natural beauty to the international community,” he said at the event’s press conference today.
Meanwhile, he also said the state government has selected the traditional costume of Penampang KadazanDusun ethnic as a token gift for the participating countries in the festival.
“Sabah Cultural Board also collects traditional costumes from other countries which then will be exhibited for the public,” he said.
SIFF was first held in the state in 2001, followed later in 2004 and 2007 before the programme became an annual event beginning from 2009 until 2014, organized by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture an Environment through the Sabah Cultural Board.
Among the main events for the festival are the Cultural Parade, Arts Exhibition, Photography Exhbition and Competition, and the Local Folklore Dance Competition.
Countries taking part in the 2015 SIFF are Slovakia, Latvia, Indonesia, Philippine, South Korea, Russia, Brunei, Sakha Yakutia Republic, Kazakhstan, Taiwan, India, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, Mexico, Bangladesh, China, and Malaysia. – SayangSabah
