KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (RTD) will carry out inspections and monitoring at 29 major bus terminals throughout the country in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebrations on Monday.
RTD Director of Enforcement, Datuk V. Valluvan Veloo said the inspections# aimed to prevent undesired incidents during the exodus back to the travellers’ hometowns using buses.
“The inspections are to ensure that drivers follow the criteria stipulated and that buses are in good condition,” he told reporters at a media conference in conjunction with the Chinese New Year Operations, here today.
He said the public could help the RTD in monitoring wrongdoings committed by irresponsible bus drivers throughout the journey to their respective destinations.
“Members of the public are urged to send photographs of any wrongdoing to the RTD and we will take further action,” he said.
In another development, Valluvan said 4,500 enforcement officers together with 500 members of the 1 RTD Young Squad would carry out patrols on the highways and major roads throughout the country.
“According to statistics, in the operation carried out beginning Feb 1, action was taken on a total of 1,220 out of the 6,000 vehicles inspected. Among the most common offences committed were driving without licence or
driving with expired licence,” he said.
The RTD would also implement a Prohibition Order on the Driving of Goods Vehicles on Feb 6, 7, 13 and 14, he added.- BERNAMA
