RM48 million for schools in Sabah

TUARAN: The Education Ministry has set aside RM48 million for the construction and rehabilitation of schools in Sabah.

Its secretary general Tan Sri Dr Madinah Mohamad said of the amount, RM25 million would be spent on rebuilding and restoring 22 schools that were damaged by fire, floods and landslides last year.

The ministry would present the warrant for the projects to the StateEducation Department next week, she told reporters after visiting Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Penimbawan here, today.

Also present were senior confidential secretary to the

hief Secretary to the Government, Datuk Norazman Ayob and Sabah Education director Datuk Jame Alip.

On her visit to SK Penimbawan, Madinah said eight new blocks would be built on the original site of the school which was razed by fire last May.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak instructed Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Ali Hamsa through Twitter, to look into the dilemma faced by the school which was operating without proper infrastructure.

SK Penimbawan is about 70 kilometres from Kota Kinabalu by land, and reachable by boat in 15 minutes.

The school has 248 pupils and 22 teachers; 102 pupils in Year 2, 3, and 4, have been doing their lessons in makeshift classrooms since the fire.-BERNAMA
