Respect each other for ethnic unity

KOTA KINABALU: The Head of State, Tun Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Haji Juhar Datuk Haji Mahiruddin, urges the people to remain united and respect each other, besides from appreciating the different cultures of other ethnics.

In his speech for the Christmas and 2016 New Year Celebration, Tun Juhar said the celebration and other festivals held annually play an essential role in preserving religious tolerance, harmony, understanding, and ethnic unity.

“the existing unity should be preserved and strengthened so that we can be a progressive and developed Malaysians according to our own mould.

“‘The people should uphold their responsibility to cultivate ethnic understanding for the sake of unity in Sabah.

“Tolerance and attentiveness to the sensitivity of others are for the preservation of unity and harmony.

Respecting each other and honesty are positive values that can build solidarity as we live in harmony and peace.

“If we lose our unity, the harmony that we enjoy will disappear,” he said at Istana Negeri.

Tun Juhar stressed that society members must not ridicule other faiths, custom, and traditions in the state, and instead they should help in preventing provocation on the people’s sensitivity.

“The people should avoid any activities provoking ethnic tension and they must not exploit the freedom of speech, because it will only harm the harmony in the country.

“Make the difference that comes with the colourful ethnicities as a strength and advantage to complement each other for the benefit of unity, harmony, and national stability.

He also advised the community to love and respect their neighbours, where without these values, the family and society institutions will become weak and give rise to social problems such as robbery, baby dumping, abandonment, and others.

The young generation, he added, should not use technology for negative purpose or to spread sedition which are detrimental to public harmony, and instead it must be utilized with good intention and for the good of the people.

Tun Juhar also expresses his sympathy for the city of Paris and the recent terrorism incident in the city, adding that the government is serious in handling crimes related to terrorism.

In this matter he calls for the public especially youths not to be influenced by extremism or get close with groups spreading such ideal.

To prevent the loss of lives and safe journey, he said everyone should be responsible as road users and adhere to traffic regulations.

Tun Juhar also express his gratitude for security personnel who sacrifice their time to be with their families in order to carry out their duty and committed in ensuring the people and country are safe during the festive season. -SayangSabah
