KOTA KINABALU: The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Central Youth Movement Secretary David Ong told PAS to respect Malaysia Constitution or risk breaking up the nation.
“PAS’ move to table Private Members’ Bill to pave way for hudud penalties in Kelantan is going against the wishes of our forefathers when Malaysia was formed in 1963. As such, it will potentially aggravate the secession spirit from a growing group of Sabahans and Sarawakians and further strengthening the movement”.
“The Constitution of Malaysia is the supreme law of the land which is the ideal law for nation with diversity of ethnicity, multi-cultural and multi-religious background. Or 52 years of nationhood clearly reflects our country as a secular nation, albeit the existence of Syariah Courts with jurisdiction limited to family law and religious observances which run parallel with our Civil Courts.
The present secular law is the most appropriate law for Malaysia. We do not need two sets of law to govern the country”. Tunku Abdul Rahman once said that “This country has a multiracial population with various beliefs. Malaysia must continue as a secular state with Islam as the official religion”.
PAS had earlier appealed to critics of Hudud Law to respect the democratic process of tabling the Private Members’ Bill in Parliment. However, Ong reminded PAS to uphold democracy with justice and fairness and not democracy which is lop sided.-Sayangsabah
