KOTA KINABALU: Chinese-based political parties in the country have been urging the Malaysian’s government to give recognition to the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) from the Chinese independent schools.
Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) president Datuk Teo Chee Kang, said yesterday: “UEC is recognised by many renowned universities in the world, which accept students with UEC into first year of undergraduate studies.
“As such, the government should give full recognition to UEC as soon as possible.”
He said MCA, Gerakan and Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) also shared the same stance as LDP on this issue.
Teo, who is also the Minister of Special Tasks had also highlighted the issue to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak last year when he officiated at the LDP congress at a resort here.
Teo added during the congress, LDP had also passed a resolution to pursue the matter in urging the government to give recognition to UEC.
But, Teo said the details and technical issues must be clarified in order to resolve this matter.
“However, Dong Zong is currently facing internal crisis, which hindered the process of obtaining recognition for UEC,” he said.
And since education is under the purview of the Federal Government thus we should pursue this matter directly with Putrajaya, he said.
On Tuesday, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Mah Siew Keong, said a memorandum has been sent to the government to look into the recognition of UEC.
“Also in the memorandum are suggestions and ideas related to the matters as many community are concerned and hope UEC will be recognised by the Malaysian government.
“I had a dialogue session with the parties concerned as this issue has been long overdue,” said Mah who is also Gerakan’s president during a walkabout at Lido market, off Penampang road here.
He hopes they would receive the good news this year though unsure if the recognition will be given, but at least efforts has taken towards that direction.
He also called on the Dong Zong to resolve their internal conflicts soon.-Sayangsabah
