Punished for keeping smuggled cigarettes

KOTA KINABALU: A business premise owner was sentenced to three days jail and RM28,170.40 fine by the Magistrate Court for keeping smuggled cigarettes.

Syafiq Hassan, 48, admitted guilty  in front of Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun for possessing 1279 packs of smuggled cigarettes inside his shop at Jalan Peter Mojuntin, Putatan, in 27 November, around 11.30pm.

The accused was charged under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act which carries the punishment of a fine up to twenty times the value of smuggled items, three years jail maximum, or both.

In mitigation, the defendant’s lawyer Lim Chung Loong applied for a minimum fine and one day jail since his client has learnt his lesson.
