MANTANANI ISLAND (Kota Belud): Early exposure on fire safety for the public can help to save lives and properties in the country.
Minister of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan, said fire safety awareness needs to become a culture and practiced to ensure fire safety protocols are met.
“Buildings are basically will not burn itself, instead it happens and spread (fire) due to negligence and misconduct of the tenants,” he said in his speech for Sabah fire and Rescue Department Fire Safety Campaign event, here today.
Fire extinguishers equipment were also distributed at the event for 155 houses, as well as for clinic, mosques, and primary schools.
Abdul Rahman said, death statistics due to fire in the state last year has increased to 27 people compared to 16 on 2013.
According to him, the public needs to be concern and aware in dealing with fire and not to point fingers on each other when fire disaster occurred.
“All parties need to realize that fire prevention is our responsibility, together.
Regarding on the campaign, he said that such programme can help to make a society that is knowledgeable in fire safety conduct, and applying it as part of their culture.
“Our children is an asset for the country and we need to make sure that they are safe from fire disaster,” he added.
“The campaign’s theme, ‘Safety of Family, Nation’s Wellbeing’ is appropriate with the fire and rescue department’s target; to reduce fire incident in the country,” he said. – SayangSabah
