KOTA KINABALU: The public are urged to cooperate in protecting and preserving forest areas in the state, in line with ‘The Heart of Borneo’ (HOB) approach, due to a series of threats on the invaluable natural resource.
Sabah Forestry Department Director, Datuk Sam Mannan, said the HOB concept is an important initiative that has been planned to ensure the rainforest of Borneo to be preserved.
“Sabah has the biggest wetland areas in the country with 340,000 hectares of mangrove forest, and we will ensure that these areas are well preserved by following the examples of other countries that are successful in forest preservation,” he said.
He also said protecting wetlands which are known as a natural water catchment area is vital in reducing the possibility of natural disasters from occurring.
He was speaking during the Heart of Borneo International Conference at Magellan Sutera Harbour, this morning. –SayangSabah
