KOTA KINABALU: Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) Kota Kinabalu with the cooperation of Petronas will launch the Sahabat Maritim programme (MEGA) on 22 August at Mantanani Island, Kota Beldu.
APMM Administration and Financial Division Director, Nurlaineh Tamsir, said the programme is to increase awareness among the island’s communities on the need to ensure safety when out at sea.
“The programme will give exposure to the local fishermen on the danger of fish bombing activities to oil platforms nearby the island,” he said during the programme briefing at Wisma WB.
The programme is also to promote the tourism industry in Mantanani Island which offer various interesting water activities for tourists, he added.
“Various welfare and community programmes will be carried out throughout the programme including gotong royong to clean the beach areas and repairing the public jetty,” he said.
Other agencies and departments are also involved with the programme, including the National Registration Department, National Anti Drug Agency, and Welfare Department.
Dialogue session will also be held to give the local residents the opportunity to voice their problems to the related departments and agencies, he added. -SayangSabah
