LABUAN: The Labuan Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ) received RM1 million in business and income zakat (tithe) from 12 corporate bodies and individuals at a one-day programme held in conjunction with Ramadan.
The presentation was held before the breaking-of-fast organised by the Labuan Malay Entrepreneurs Chamber (DUML) with the cooperation of PPZ last Friday.
The corporate bodies that handed over the zakat included Bank Muamalat, Etiqa Insurance Sdn Bhd, D’One Mart Labuan Sdn Bhd, Mega 3 Engineering Sdn Bhd, Preston Shipyard, Isar Services, Klinik Bakti, Labuan Liberty Port Management (LLPM) and Tunas Rakyat Sdn Bhd.
DUML president and LLPM chief executive officer, Datuk Seri Alias Abd Rahman said the company had organised the programme since 2006 and received overwhelming response from corporate bodies in the duty-free island.
“The amount of zakat, be it from corporate bodies or individuals increased steadily since we organised this programme almost 10 years ago. It shows
increased awareness among the corporate players and individuals on the need to pay zakat,” he said.
PPZ assistant manager Ahmad Sharizal Mohd Saffian said the zakat collection would enable the centre to help the needy and other eligible groups to receive aid.- BERNAMA
