KOTA KINABALU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) President Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan and party leaders held a walkabout to wish the people a happy Chinese New Year.
They started their walk at Lido in Penampang at about 7am where they also distributed festive greeting cards, and calendars to the public and vendors.
The group then went to Lintasan Deasoka to join the Sabah State Water Department’s Consumer Day and Water Conservation programme that was held there.
Education exhibitions such as tips on conservation water as well as entertainment performances including lion dance, magic show, singing performances and photograph opportunities with various mascot were also been organised for the public.
Pairin, together with his deputies, Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Maximus Ongkili who is the Minister for Energy, Green Technology and Water, Datuk Dr. Yee Moh Chai, and Senator Datuk Jamilah Sulaiman, Secretary General Datuk Johny Mositun, party vice presidents, and other leaders then went to meet and greet shoppers and vendors at the busy and colourful Gaya Street Sunday Market.
Pairin, who is also Sabah Deputy Chief Minister cum Infrastructure Development Minister said the water department which is under his ministry took advantage of the occasion to hold the programme for the public to spread awareness on the need to conserve water especially as the country is expected to face dry season.
He also reminded the public to continue promote peace live with harmony.
“The diversity in cultures, races and religions of our country are so rich and beautiful, and if these can be properly harnessed and appreciated, our country will prosper,” he said.
The programme was also held in a carnival atmosphere fitting with the celebration mood.
Pairin added that Chinese New Year was not only an occasion for families and friends to come together, as well as to strengthen unity among Malaysians of all races, but it is also a tourist attraction with its vibrant traditions.-Sayangsabah
